Crochet Hook: US Size L (8mm)
1 Size Fits Most Women
Notes: 1. For a larger size use US Size N (9mm) crochet hook; follow same directions.
2. Special stitch for this pattern (worked at center front and center back to form a point):
“Center Shell” = 2dc, ch 3, 2dc
Start:
With US Size L crochet hook, ch 63 loosely. Join with sl st to first ch to form ring, being careful not to twist ch. Ch 1, and do not turn.

Begin neck:

Row 1: Work 1 sc in each ch around . Place a safety pin to mark beginning of row, moving it up for the next 2 rows.

Rows 2 and 3: Work sc in each sc. At end of Row 3, join with sl st to first sc.

Begin bodice:

Row 1: Ch3, dc in next sc, ch 1, sk 1 sc, (dc in next 2 sc, ch 1, sk next sc) 4X, work center shell (see note #2, above) in next sc, ch 1, sk next sc, (dc in next 2 sc, ch 1, sk next sc) 10X, work center shell, ch 1, sk next sc, (dc in next 2 sc, ch 1, sk next sc) 5X. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3.
Note: You will have 10 2dc groups on each side of center shell point. With each row you will be increasing 1 group of 2dc on each side of center shell point for a total of 2 extra groups each row.

Hook: US size 5 steel crochet hook

Abbreviations: Beg = Beginning
Sc Dec = Single Crochet Decrease (Insert hook in first stitch indicated, yo, pull up loop, insert hook in second stitch indicated, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull thru remaining 3 loops on hook.)
St = Stitch
Tr = Treble
Yo = Yarn Over Hook

Instructions:
In order to determine the number of motifs that you will need to make, and consequently determine the finished size of your poncho, you will need to do a bit of simple math. Grab some scrap thread for this quick size determining exercise, and chain in multiples of 15, until you have a loop that fits comfortably over your shoulders. The larger this loop is, the better, so that you will end up with more freedom of arm movement as the poncho progresses, but don't make it so large that the loop (your poncho's neck-hole) slides down over your shoulders. For every multiple of 15 that you chained in order to come up with a comfortable loop size, make one motif. The poncho pictured above, for example, is make with a base chain of 180, or, 15 x 12, thus requiring 12 motifs to be made for the completed poncho size.

Flower Motif: (Make Pre-Determined Number)

Row 1: With the color of thread selected for the poncho's flowers, ch 5, sl st in beg ch to form a loop.
Row 2: Ch 1, work 12 sc in loop. End with a sl st in 1st sc.
Row 3: (Ch 8, sk 2 sc, sl st into 3rd sc) 3 times. Ch 8, sl st into beg sc.
Row 4: Ch 1, (Sc, hdc, dc, 10 tr, dc, hdc, sc) in all four ch-10 loops. End with a sl st in beginning sc.
Row 5: (Ch 3, sl st in next stitch) across all four petals. Last sl st goes into same stitch as beginning ch-3. Tie off. Weave in ends.
Row 6: Working with your contrasting colored thread and a completed flower, join thread with a sc dec in the 13th ch-3 loop of one petal and the 3rd ch-3 loop of the next petal, so that the two petals are pulled together by the one stitch and 5 ch-3 loops have been ignored in between. *Ch 10, sk 4 ch-3 loops, sc in 5th ch-3 loop. Ch 10, sk 4 ch-3 loops, sc 5th ch-3 loop and 3rd ch-3 loop of next petal together. Repeat from * around. End with a ch 10, sl st in top of beg sc dec.
Row 7: Ch 1, sc in same sp. *(Ch 3, 2 dc in ch-10 loop, ch 3, sc in same loop) 4 times, but put the last (4th) sc in the previous row's sc at the end of the current ch-10. Repeat from * around. End with a sl st in your beg sc. Tie off. Weave in ends.

Body:

Row 1: With the color of thread selected for the poncho's body, chain multiples of 15 to reach your pre-determined length. Sl st into beg ch to form a loop.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in same sp. (Ch 5, sk 2 ch, sc in 3rd ch) around. End with ch 2, dc in beg sc.
Row 3-4:(Ch 5, sc in previous row's next ch-5 loop)around. End with ch 2, dc in top of previous row's dc.
Row 5: Pick up a flower motif and hold it up against the back of your ch-5 rows, so that the "wrong" sides are together and your view of the motif is partially blocked by your ch-5 rows. *Ch 2. On your motif, find any one sc dec where two of your petals have been pulled together, and from that sc dec, skip a ch-3 sp, and sc dec the next 2 ch-3 loops together. (This sc dec can best be made by pointing the hooked part of your hook away from your body to insert it into the 1st ch-3 loop, angling it back towards your body in order to insert it into the 2nd ch-3 loop immediately to the left of the 1st, then yarning-over and pulling up a loop, then yarning-over and pulling the loop through the remaining 2 loops on your hook) Ch 2, sc into next ch-5 loop back on poncho body. (Ch 2, sk 2 ch-3 motif loops, sc dec 3rd & 4th ch-3 loops together, ch 2, sc into next ch-5 loop back on poncho body) 3 times. Ch 5, sk 2 ch-3 loops on motif, sc dec 3rd & 4th loops together. Pick up another flower motif and position it as the one before, with the backsides of motif and body touching, and the body's ch-5 loops partially blocking the motif. Sc dec 2 ch-3 loops together, where they are located immediately before the motif's sc dec pulling the flower petals together. Ch5, sc in next ch-5 loop back on poncho body. Repeat from * around, replacing the initial "find any one sc dec" with "sk 2 ch-3 loops" and putting your sc dec in the 3rd & 4th ch-3 loops from last stitch in motif. End row with a sc dec into 2 ch-3 loops of the beginning flower, ch 5, sl st in top of previous row's end dc. Tie off. Weave in ends.
Row 6: On any 1 motif, select the sc that is at the very bottom, directly opposite where your poncho body has been worked. From this sc, skip 1 ch-3 loop, and, with a sc dec, re-attach your thread in the 2nd & 3rd ch-3 loops. *(Ch 7, skip next 2 ch-3 loops, sc dec 3rd & 4th ch-3 loops together) twice. Ch 7, yo 4 times, skip next 2 ch-3 loops, insert hook in 3rd ch-3 loop, yo, pull up loop, insert hook in next (4th) ch-3 loop, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull thru 3 loops on hook. (Yo, pull through 2 loops on hook) 3 times. With 2 loops remaining on your hook, progress to the next motif and skip 6 ch-3 loops from where motifs are joined with sc dec's. Yo 4 times, insert hook in 7th ch-3 loop, yo, pull up loop, insert hook in next (8th) ch-3 loop, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 3 loops on hook. (Yo, pull through 2 loops on hook) 3 times. Yo, pull through remaining 3 loops on hook. (Ch 7, skip next 2 ch-3 loops, sc dec 3rd & 4th ch-3 loops together) 4times. Repeat from * around. End with a ch 3, tr in top of beg sc dec.

Row 7: *(Ch 7, sc in next ch-7 loop) 3 times. Ch 7, sc in top of quadruple-treble-decrease, (ch 7, sc in next ch-7 loop) 4 times. Repeat from * around. End with a ch 3, tr in top of previous row's end tr.
Row 8-19: Ch 7, sc in next ch-7 loop, around. End with a ch 3, tr in top of previous row's end tr.
Row 20:Ch 1, 7 sc along edge of tr. (12 sc in next ch 7 sp) around. End with 5 sc in ch-3 sp, sl st into beg sc. Tie off. Weave in ends.

Finishing: Work 3 or 4 sc (depending on your tension) in each ch-2 space across the top of the poncho. Sl st in top of beg sc. Tie off. Weave in ends.

Size/Dimensions: Adult (each panel measures 22” by 34”)
Gauge: 6 rows of 14 dc make a 4” square
Instructions: Make 2 identical panels as follows:
Foundation: Ch 61.
Row 1: Dc into 4th chain from hook (counts as first two dc), dc into each of next 5 ch, *skip 2 ch, 5 dc into next ch, ch 2 skip 3 ch, dc into each of next 7 ch; repeat from * to end, turn.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as first dc). Sk st at bottom of turning ch, dc into each of next 6 st, *sk ch-2 sp, 5 dc into first dc of shell on previous row, sk remaining 4 dc of shell, ch 2, dc into each of next 7 st; repeat from * to end, turn.
Repeat row 2 31 more times, or until piece measures 34” long. Fasten off.
Layout both panels and seam together as indicated in the diagram below. One short end of each panel attaches to the long side of the other panel. This gives the poncho a point in the front and back, with a slightly asymmetrical appearance.
When worn, the poncho looks like this, from front or back:

Variations:
For a shorter poncho: Chain 48 and do one less repeat of the pattern. Each panel should measure approximately 19” by 31”.
For a longer poncho: Chain 74 and do one more repeat of pattern. Each panel should measure approximately 25” by 37”.
To increase or decrease the neck opening: Notice in the examples given for a shorter or longer poncho, the panels are always 12 inches longer than they are wide. This creates an opening 24 inches around, which is sufficient for most adults.
To make the opening larger, make each panel longer OR skinnier so that the difference between the length and width is greater. To make the opening smaller, make each panel shorter or wider so that the difference between the length and width is smaller.

Crochet Gauge: 12 tr x 7 rows with 1 thread of Alpaca and 1 thread of Cotton Viscose = 10 x 10 cm. 12 dtr x 5 rows = 10 x 10 cm. 1 report in pattern = width approx 12 cm.

Crochet info: At the beginning of each row substitute 1 dc with a ch, 1 tr with 3 ch and 1 dtr with 4 ch.
Pattern: See diagram 1 – diagram 2 shows the repeat in the width.

Poncho: Crochet the piece from the top and down.
Crochet loosely 70-76-84 ch on hook size 5 with 1 thread of Alpaca and 1 thread of Cotton Viscose. Crochet

1st row as follows: 1 tr in the 4th ch from the hook, 1 tr in each remaining 66-72-80 ch = 68-74-82 tr. Turn the piece. Read crochet info! Continue to crochet tr’s forward and backward at the same time inc as follows (to inc 1 tr crochet 2 tr’s in 1 tr):

Size S/M: Inc 1 tr in every other tr but finish with only 1 tr in the last tr = 101 tr. Crochet 1 row without inc. On the next row inc 1 tr in every 3rd tr = 134 tr. Crochet 2 rows without any inc. On the next row inc. 47 tr evenly distributed on row = 181tr

Size M/L: Inc 1 tr in every other tr but finish with only 1 tr in the last tr = 110 tr. Crochet 1 row without inc. On the next row inc 1 tr in every 3rd tr = 146 tr. Crochet 1 row without any inc. On the next row inc. 1 tr in every 4th tr = 182 tr. Crochet 1 row without any inc, and on the next row inc. 35 tr evenly distributed on row = 217 tr.

Size XL/XXL: Inc 1 tr in every other tr but finish with only 1 tr in the last tr = 122 tr. Crochet 1 row without inc. On the next row inc 1 tr in every 3rd tr = 162 tr. Crochet 1 row without any inc. On the next row inc. 1 tr in every 4th tr = 202 tr. Crochet 2 rows without any inc, and on the next row inc. 51 tr evenly distributed on row = 253 tr.

When all inc. are complete the piece measures 10-11-13 cm. Now crochet pattern – see diagram 1. Crochet 2 repeats, but start the second repeat in the row marked with arrows. Now crochet 2-3-4 rows of dtr as follows: NB: If you want to adjust the length of the poncho either add or subtract a row of dtr’s.

1st row: Remember crochet info: Crochet 1 dtr around each ch-loop with a ch in between = 90-109-127 dtr, turn the piece.

2nd row: Crochet 1 dtr into each dtr but instead of 1 ch in between crochet 2 ch’s – Size S/M finish here before the last pattern repeat = 91 dtr’s.

3rd row: Crochet a dtr in each dtr but now crochet 3 ch’s in between each dtr instead of 2 ch – size M/L finish here before the last pattern repeat = 109 dtr’s.

4th row: Crochet 1 dtr into each dtr with 3 ch’s in between each dtr. Size XL/XXL finish here before the last pattern repeat = 127 dtr’s.

After the last row of dtr crochet Diagram 1 again from the beginning, but finish the pattern after the 7th row in diagram – NB: Crochet 1st row in diagram as follows so the pattern fits: 3 ch (=1 tr), 1 ch, *1 tr around the ch-loop, 1 ch, 1 tr around the next ch-loop*, repeat from *-* to the end of the row = 180-216-252 ch-loops.

Buttons: Crochet a “cover” for the 3 buttons with Cotton Viscose as follows: Crochet 2 ch, continue to crochet 16 tr in the 1st of the 2 ch crochet, finish off with a sl st in the top of the 1st tr (= 1st round 1).

2nd round: Crochet 1 dc into each tr and finish off with a sl st in the 1st dc from beginning of round.

3rd round: Crochet 1 tr into every other dc and finish off with a sl st in the 1st tr from beginning of the round = 8 tr.
Put the buttons into the cover, sew around the edge and pull together. Sew the buttons on the right side of the poncho. The top button should be approx 1 cm from the edge and leave 4-6 cm in between the others.

Button loop: Crochet loops for the buttons on left side as follows: 1 dc in the corner of the neck, 1 dc into the same st, *4 ch, skip 3-3.5-4 cm, 1 dc in the next st*, repeat a total of 3 times - a total of 3 loops matching the location of the buttons.

Necklace and bracelet:
Length: Necklace: 60 cm. Bracelet: 35 cm
Materials: Alpaca and Cotton Viscose. Leftovers from the Poncho

Drops crochet hook size 3 for the buttons and size 5 for flowers and chain.
Drops mother of pearl button, no. 521: 2 pcs.
Accessories: 1 button approx. 2 cm in diameter to crochet round.

Necklace:

Flower: Crochet 4 ch on hook size 5 with 1 thread of Alpaca and 1 thread of Cotton Viscose and make a loop with a sl st.

1st round: 3 ch (=1 tr), crochet 13 tr around the loop and finish with a sl st in the 3rd ch from beginning of round.

2nd round: *4 ch, 1 tr in the 1st of the 1st of the 4 ch, skip 1 tr, 1 dc in the next tr*, repeat from *-* a total of 7 times but finish with a sl st in the sl st from the end for the previous round (instead of a dc in the next st) = 7 leaves. To make a small loop on the backside of the flower, use the thread end from the beginning and crochet 1 dc in the centre of the flower, 2 ch, and attach with a sl st.

Chain: Crochet 2 ch on hook size 5 with 1 thread of Alpaca and 1 thread of Cotton Viscose, crochet 1 sl st and 1 dc in the 1st ch crochet. Continue with ch’s until the chain is approx 60 cm and finish with a dc and a sl st in the second but last ch. Cut and sew the threads. Crochet 2 flowers – see explanation above. Sew a mother of pearl button in the centre of 1 flower and pull them on the chain. Crochet a button with 1 thread of Cotton Viscose on hook size 3 as explained under Poncho. Crochet 1 loop on the backside of the button the same way as done for the flowers and pull the button on the chain.

Bracelet: Crochet 2 ch on hook size 5 with 1 thread o Alpaca and 1 thread of Cotton Viscose. Crochet a sl st and a dc in the 1st crochet ch. Continue with ch’s until the bracelet measures 35 cm and finish with a dc and a sl st in the second last ch. Cut and sew the thread. Crochet 1 flower – see explanation above. Sew a mother of pearl button in the centre of the flower and pull it on the bracelet chain.

Explanations to the pattern diagram
= 1 ch
= 1 dc
= 1 tr
= 1 picot (=3 ch, crochet 1 dc into the 1st of these 3 ch)

Crochet Gauge: 1 diamond should measure 15 x 15 cm (diagonal 21 cm).

Shawl: The shawl is made up of 21 squares and 7 half squares crochet as explained below, and crochet together as explained in diagram 1 and diagram 2 (see how to crochet together below).

1 whole square: Crochet 4 ch on hook size 6 with 1 thread of Alpaca and 1 thread of Vivaldi and make a loop with a sl st.
1st round: 3 ch (= 1 tr), crochet 11 tr around the loop and finish with a sl st in the 3rd ch from beginning of round = 12 tr.
2nd round: *4 ch, 1 tr in the 1st of the 4 ch, skip 1 tr, 1 sl st in the next tr*, repeat from *-* a total of 6 times and finish with a sl st in the sl st from the end of the previous round = 6 leaves.
3rd round: 3 ch, 1 dc in the top of the 1st leaf, *7 ch, 1 dc in the top of the next leaf* repeat from *-* a total of 6 times and finish with a sl st in the dc at the top of the 1st leaf = 6 loops.
4th round: *4 ch, 1 tr in the 1st of the 4 ch, 1 dc around the loop, 4 ch, 1 tr in the 1st of the 4 ch, 1 dc in the dc between the loops*, repeat from *-* a total of 6 times and finish with a sl st in the sl st from the end of the previous round = 12 leaves.
5th round: 3 ch,*1 dc in the top of the 1st leaf, 7 ch, 1 dc in the top of the next leaf, 7 ch, 1 dc in the next leaf, 11 ch*, repeat from *-* a total of 4 times and finish with a sl st in the 1st dc from beginning of round = 4 corners with 2 ch-loops in between.

1 half square: Crochet 4 ch on hook size 6 with 1 thread of Alpaca and 1 thread of Vivaldi and make a loop with a sl st.
1st round: 3 ch (= 1 tr), crochet 11 tr around the loop and finish with a sl st in the 3rd ch from beginning of round = 12 tr.
2nd round: *4 ch, 1 tr in the 1st of the 4 ch, skip 1 tr, 1 sl st in the next tr*, repeat from *-* a total of 6 times and finish with a sl st in the sl st from the end of the previous round = 6 leafs. Now crochet rows back and forth instead of rounds.
3rd row: 3 ch, 1 dc in the top of the 1st leaf, *7 ch, 1 dc in the top of the next leaf* repeat from *-* a total of 3 times = 3 ch- loops. Turn the piece.
4th row: *4 ch, 1 tr in the 1st of the 4 ch, 1 dc into the dc between the loops*, repeat from *-* a total of 3 times and finish with a dc in the dc from the end of the previous round = 6 leaves. Turn the piece.

5th row: *11 ch, 1 dc in the top of the 1st leaf, 7 ch, 1 dc in the top of the next leaf, 7 ch, 1 dc in the next leaf*, repeat from *-* 1 time and finish with 11 ch and a sl st into the 1st ch from beginning of previous row = 3 corners with 2 ch-loops in between.

How to crochet the squares tog: Crochet 1 whole square (= square 1), crochet 1 more (= square 2), but on the last round crochet square 2 tog. with square 1 as shown in diagram - this means the last round on square 2 is crochet as described under "1 whole square" but in 1 corner crochet 5 ch, then a dc into a corner of square1, 5 ch (instead of 11 ch).
Now crochet square 3, but on the last round crochet square 3 tog. with square 2 and square 1 as follows: 5 ch, 1 dc into the corner of square 2, 5 ch. 1 dc around the next loop on square 3, 3 ch. 1 dc around the next ch-loop on square 2, 3 ch, 1 dc around the the next loop on square 3, 3 ch. 1 dc into the next ch-loop on square 2, 3 ch. 1 dc around the next loop on square 3, 5 ch. 1 dc into the dc which holds the corner tog. of square 1 and square 2, 5 ch. 1 dc into the next loop on square 3, 3 ch. 1 dc around the next ch-loop on square1, 3 ch, 1 dc around the next loop on square 3, 3 ch. 1 dc around the next ch loop on square 1, 3 ch, 1 dc around the next loop on square 3, 5 ch. 1 dc around the corner of square 1, 5 ch, 1 dc around the next loop on square 3, now crochet the last round as explained under "1 whole square".

Continue to crochet together as follows: Put the work flat as you go along as it becomes easier to control each square which needs to be crochet tog – NB: Solid lines in diagram 1 indicate crochet as described under "1 whole square"; dotted lines indicate the number of ch’s and dc’s where crochet tog. When you have crochet 6 rows of whole squares, crochet the 7 half squares, at the same time crochet them tog with the whole squares – see diagram 2.

Crochet edge: Crochet an edge along the whole shawl using crochet hook size 6 with 2 threads of Vivaldi as follows: Begin in one of the top corners and crochet downwards as follows: 1 dc into the ch-loop at the corner, *7 ch, 1 dc into the next dc*, repeat from *-* around the whole shawl, but along the flowers in the half square at the top of the shawl crochet 3 ch, 1 dc in between 2 leaves, 3 ch, 1 dc into the top of the leaf, 3 ch, 1 dc in between the next 2 leaves and so on. When you have crochet 1 round around the whole shawl crochet 1 more row but only along the sides (i.e. not along the top edge): *4 ch, 1 tr into the 1st of the 4 ch, 1 dc around the ch-loop, 4 ch, 1 tr into the 1st of the 4 ch, 1 dc into the dc in between the ch-loops*, repeat from *-*.

Bubbles: Crochet 15 bubbles, and sew to the shawl at the point where 4 corners meet up – see photo. 1 bubble = Crochet 4 ch (= 1 ch + 1 tr) on hook size 6 with 2 threads of Vivaldi. Crochet 3 tr into the 1st of the 4 ch crochet (= 4 tr), turn the piece. Crochet 3 ch (= 1 tr), crochet the next 3 tr tog (i.e. crochet 1 tr into the next tr but wait with the last pull through (= 2 sts on hook), crochet 1 tr into the next tr, but wait with the last pull through (= 3 sts on hook), crochet 1 tr into the 3rd ch from beginning of previous row, and pull through all 4 yrh’s. Cut the thread, form the bubble and use the 2 ends of threads to sew the bubble to the shawl.
